Can Owls Be Kept as Pets? 

Owls are predatory birds with large eyes known for hunting at night. Many people find them fascinating and want to keep them as pets. In Indonesia, owls are protected birds. They are included in the list based on Government Regulation Number 7 of 1999. This regulation concerns the Preservation of Plant and Animal Species.  However, some types of owls are not included in that list. Species such as the Burung Serak Jawa (Tyto alba) can still be kept with certain permits.  Therefore, before keeping an owl, make sure to check the regulations applicable in your area.

Interaction with Humans

Unlike other pet birds that can become close to their owners, owls tend to be more independent. They require less interaction with humans. If raised from a young age, owls can indeed recognize their owners. However, they still retain a wild instinct. This instinct is hard to change. Owls have a relatively long lifespan, with some species even living more than 20 years. This means that keeping an owl is a long-term commitment that must be carefully considered.
